Introducing EMUI as the latest skin sitting on top of Android on Huawei and Honor devices. It’s far from the most popular skin out there. The skin gets a bad rap because it changes the look and feel of Android quite a bit and tries to imitate iOS in many ways.
Despite its shortcomings, Huawei’s skin offers a lot of useful features that improve the smartphone experience. Some of these are specific to EMUI versions 8.0 and higher, and a few others are only included in the company’s high-end devices.
The latest version of the skin is currently EMUI 8.1, which runs on the Huawei P20, P20 Pro, and the Honor 10. The Mate 10 series still runs EMUI 8.0 — the 8.1 update is coming soon. The previous version of the skin,EMUI 5.0, debuted on last year’s Mate 9. Huawei decided to jump from 5.0 to 8.0 to align the number with the latest version of Android.
PC mode brings the smartphone experience to a larger screen. Just connect your phone to an external monitor using a USB Type-C to HDMI cable and you’re good to go — there’s no dock required like with the Samsung’s Galaxy phones. You can even add Bluetooth peripherals like a mouse and keyboard or use the phone’s display as a trackpad.
PC mode also comes with a feature called Privacy protection. When you get a call, a text, or an email, it will make sure it doesn’t reveal sensitive info on the big screen.
It’s worth noting that PC mode is currently only supported by a few high-end Huawei smartphones, like the Mate 10 and P20.
