Samsung Unpacked

Samsung Unpacked is the annual event hosted by the tech giant to showcase it’s newest plans for consumers. The news that Samsung’s latest Unpacked event will take place on August 9th has energized the community. It is widely expected to be the launch of Samsung’s update to its Phablet family, namely the Galaxy Note 9. But the early launch promises something else. More momentum and an earlier launch of the Galaxy S10.

This Samsung Unpacked event is weeks earlier than in previous years. That provides some short-term wins for the Galaxy Note 9 it gives it first mover advantage over the Android devices set to launch at Berlin’s IFA (which starts this year on Aug 31st), and the upcoming iPhone X Plus from Apple in early September.

The long-term advantage is perhaps the most exciting. The extra sales window will allow Samsung to bring forward the launch of the flagship Galaxy S10 with its keys hardware updates much earlier in the financial year. The current expectation is that the new smartphone will debut at CES 2019 in Las Vegas during January, with availability shortly after. That could mean the S10 arrives up to eight weeks ahead of schedule compared to previous years. This doesn’t seem like a long time, but with the rapidity of new devices coming out, timing is everything.

Why would Samsung accelerate the schedule? To create a gap in the market for the revolutionary folding phone provisionally titled the Galaxy X. By using the consumer focused CES for the Galaxy S10 launch, the more industry-focused Mobile World Congress event in late February can be used not just to give an extra burst of momentum to the S10, but to proudly display the hinged display and transformative Galaxy X.
